  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from BPW -- Excellent philosopher but poor formatting : I have the kindle version. Stoicism is a philosophy that is exceptionally well-suited to modern and ancient life. Epictetus is excellent at explaining his philosophy. This edition is poorly formatted. There are numerous repetitions in the text as presented. There are many instances were 'he' gets turned into 'be,' 'fail' into 'fall,' and other typos. There were a few instances where I couldn't figure out what the author was saying because of the typos. So, five stars for the book, but three stars for the formatting. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2017 )

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from gg -- Bought This for a Stoic Bud : I bought this for a buddy of mine who is very much interested in Stoicism and the idea of the true Stoic. I haven't yet had a chance to give it to him but I have to say I'm going to have to buy myself a copy of this in a couple weeks after some bills because this edition is better than I could have ever hoped to have come across. The physical dimensions of the book are quite large even though the print is small, its one of those very nice in the hand books, good light weight but big with just a touch of heft. Great addition to any Stoics collection. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2020 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Stephen Scott -- Not readable : I've become more interested in Stoicism over the last year and wanted to visit with the premiere Stoic, Epictetus. Sadly, this book's type is super-small, making it pretty much impossible to read. The publisher should be ashamed for peddling this particular edition. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Anonymous One -- Worth a lifetime of study : Fantastic read for when you need spiritual encouragement. The concepts are easy, but like everything worthwhile, difficult to put into practice on a consistent basis unless you put forth the effort. The effort will pay in peace of mind. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Roy McCullough -- A classic, but a sloppy edition : Love Stoicism and a fan of Epictetus (although I prefer Aurelius and Seneca) Knocked off a star for this edition which seems sloppily put together with typos and kerning issues throughout. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Wiley S Harris -- If you like reading 8 pt typeface, this book is for you! : I just received my copy and haven't read it yet. The 8 pt. typeface requires me to use glasses when I normally don't. Get a different edition with larger type if 8 pt is too small for you to read comfortably. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Tolstoy -- Unreadable : Font in tiny tiny....unreadable...dont waste your money ( Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mr. Jonathan Bayley -- Stoicism is far from dead : I came across this book by reading 'A Man in Full' by Tom Wolf, and it was as eye-opening as Wolf's hero, Conrad, found it. It is full of ways to view life events that prevent one from getting down-hearted and depressed, and enlarges the way that one can view Cognitive Behaviour Therapy outcomes. It is as relevant to today's problems of life as it was when it was written 2500 years ago. It is no wonder that Conrad found it changed his life -- it has changed mine as much as 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' did. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 29, 2010 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Mrs. S. Hann -- Three Stars : Fascinating ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 31, 2017 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from trillclick -- Good text bad edit. I suggest another translation or print : I get that there are different translations of the original works and that certain things can be up to interpretation, but spelling mistakes? Random letter in the middle of the sentence? It's dry, the size of the book is to large, I randomly pick up on these mistakes, not a fan of this translation or edition. Will buy another Discourse because I want this book in my library, but not this print. ( Reviewed in Canada on July 16, 2019 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from sean -- Great book, but terrible copy : I recently read some works by Massimo Pigliucci, a contemporary Stoic and was looking forward to tackling some of the primary texts of the Stoic tradition. I was particularly excited to read The Discourses of Epictetus, as Pigliucci often refers to him as the thinker who most influenced his own thinking on Stoicism. That said, when this copy arrived I was deeply disappointed. This printing has a terrible layout with small text and an awkward page format. I imagine I could make a version of similar quality by printing out a pdf on my deskjet printer. I am returning this and will buy a better quality version of the book. So thanks to the publisher for teaching me a lesson about hasty decisions, but no thanks for the crappy book. ( Reviewed in Canada on July 31, 2021 )
